Midterms open as Dallas stages a GOP show and diesel sets a record

Labor Day kicks off the general season. NPR sees a Democratic House as likeliest and a live Senate map. Republicans convene in Dallas without a platform. AAA puts diesel at a national record near $5.90.

The Labor Day open

Labor Day marks the unofficial kickoff of the general election season. Republicans hold the House and the Senate. NPR Politics on Sept. 7 framed President Trump’s second term as unpopular with most voters and a drag on the party’s candidates. Mail-in ballots are already going out in North Carolina.

NPR’s Stephen Fowler said the likeliest outcome on current polling averages is that Democrats take the House, with attention concentrated on a smaller set of expensive races. The Senate map now includes toss-ups in Iowa, Texas, Ohio, and Alaska; chamber control is no longer treated as a given for either party.

Money and message

Democratic candidates are raising more in key competitive races, Fowler said, while Republican Party groups and Trump’s super PAC MAGA Inc. hold more cash on hand. Whether that cash is spent in time remains an open question on the same broadcast.

Dallas, without a platform

Republicans stage a first-of-kind midterm convention in Dallas this week. The Guardian reported Trump is set to deliver a keynote Wednesday and closing remarks Thursday, with Vice President JD Vance and other Cabinet figures on the program. Delegates will not write rules or a platform.

A Politico survey cited by the Guardian found more than seventy Republican candidates and members polled; forty-five said they do not plan to go or are still thinking about it. Some cited other commitments; others balked at a reported twenty-five-thousand-dollar cost to attend.

The same piece put Trump’s approval at 33 percent in a Reuters/Ipsos poll last week and named battleground candidates who softened Trump-branded website language.

Thirty-five stops — and a claim

NBC News quoted Trump at a White House dinner Sept. 2: he pledged to campaign in about thirty-five races and named Alaska (Sen. Dan Sullivan) and Texas (Ken Paxton) among stops.

CNBC on Sept. 4 reported Trump’s claim that MAGA Inc. would allocate roughly four hundred to five hundred million dollars this cycle. The same piece said the PAC’s latest FEC filing showed about $403.45 million cash on hand as of July 31 — below Trump’s “close to a billion” phrasing — and that independent expenditures so far have been comparatively small. The spend figure is a claim. The cash line is a filing print.

Diesel on the contract

The Los Angeles Times said Trump’s economic record is working against Republicans heading into November. AAA, via AFP, put the U.S. average diesel price at a record $5.9015 a gallon Monday, with regular gasoline at $4.15 nationally and $5.86 in California. Freight and school-bus contracts pay diesel first.

Mail still blocked

U.S. District Judge Indira Talwani in Boston issued a preliminary injunction Sept. 4 blocking key parts of a U.S. Postal Service rule on federal mail ballots. On Sunday, Sept. 6, the Trump administration filed a new emergency application at the Supreme Court seeking to pause that injunction, withdrawing an earlier Sept. 3 ask after the judge replaced a temporary restraint with the indefinite block.

North Carolina has already begun mailing ballots. Alabama is due Sept. 9. The Justice Department told the Court at least five more states follow the week after. Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson set challenger responses for 4 p.m. ET Wednesday, Sept. 9. Key list-and-barcode requirements remain blocked while the fight runs.

Arrest at the fair

At the Canfield Fair in Mahoning County on Sunday, Patrick Havas, 38, of Canfield, shoved through a crowd toward Democratic gubernatorial candidate Amy Acton while recording on a phone, knocking people down. Ohio State Highway Patrol and local officers stopped him before he reached Acton. Acton was unharmed.

Jail records cited by the Vindicator list two felony assault counts and disorderly conduct. BBC separately reported misdemeanor assault counts until a charging document is on the public docket. The sheriff’s office said two handguns and brass knuckles were recovered after arrest and that no weapons were brandished. Gov. Mike DeWine and Republican rival Vivek Ramaswamy condemned violence at public events.

Runway overrun

A Boeing 767-300 cargo aircraft operated by 21 Air on an Amazon route overran a runway at Miami International Airport about 2 p.m. local time Sunday, Sept. 6, after a flight from San Juan, struck vehicles beyond the pavement, and caught fire.

Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said at least five people were killed and five injured. Fire chief Raied Jadallah said three of the injured were critical. The NTSB is on scene. Cause is not established. The FAA temporarily grounded flights over a busy Labor Day weekend.

AB 1381 to Newsom

California lawmakers unanimously passed AB 1381 (Muratsuchi), enrolled and presented to Gov. Gavin Newsom on Sept. 4, adding Commission on Teacher Credentialing discipline — public reprimand, suspension, or revocation — when administrators or applicants fail 2025-era employment-history vetting rules. The bill follows a KQED-ProPublica investigation that found at least fourteen educators hired by new schools after prior employers found sexual harassment or other misconduct. Newsom has until Sept. 30, 2026, to sign or veto. A searchable teacher misconduct database was dropped after union and agency pushback.
